Scoonover House Painting Project: Part 1 (Prep Work)

So, we've embarked upon the adventure of painting the exterior of our house! Last year's project was adding the walkway to the front of the house and sprucing up our flower beds. This year's project is a whole lot more ambitious than the walkway project. Our goal is to be finished by Christmas! :) What will follow are several posts, explaining the various stages of the "Scoonover House Painting Project."


Our house was built in 1956, so needless to say, there was LOTS of prep work to be done.


Step 1: Trim bushes back from the house so you can work behind them.


Step 2: Remove shutters and anything else, such as house numbers, from the exterior.

Step 3: Pressure-wash house. Thank you, Allen and Heather!!!

Step 4: Gather/purchase supplies for scraping, sanding, and any other prep work necessary. Calculate primer/paint volume for house. Choose paint colors. Purchase paint.

Step 5: Scrape off old paint on windows, siding, eaves, and doors. (Thanks, James and Jake!)

Step 11: Sand over scraped places until smooth. (Thanks, Jake, Aaron, and Ken!)


Step 12: Reglaze windows. Remove old caulking.
